I just got my IUD and I am in pain
I’m curious if anyone else is willing to share their IUD experience. My dr suggested it as the next step for pain management after surgery since I have adenomyosis (diagnosed visually in surgery and on ultrasound), but am not a candidate for hysterectomy yet since I want kids and am only 27. I’m just so on the fence about it though; I know insertion will be painful and I’m prepared for that, but I’m not sure I want it if it’s going to cause more harm than good. I already struggle to loose weight and have cramps frequently. But he thinks it’s still a good idea to try it since I’ve exhausted all my other options (already tried oral BC, surgery, pelvic PT, pain injections, and have Rx strength ibuprofen) and says if I don’t like it I don’t have to keep it.
I got my IUD (Mirena 7yr as its best for endo supposedly) last July and it actually helped me tremendously. I was having such bad cramps and migraines but once I got the IUD, it all stopped. My partner find it kind of annoying, but other than that, i have no complaints.
If you’re worried about getting it put in, I’d ask the place you’re getting it done if they do blocker injections for relieving the pain from placement. I had the blockers and it was just fine. It hurt for about 2 days and then subsided.
Did you decide to move forward with this option? Curious to know what your experience is/was if you did. Considering it for myself. Currently on an estradiol patch and progesterone pills and my bleeding/ cycles are so inconsistent.
Just got my Mirena IUD replaced during my laparoscopy Jan 6 2025.
I had it first put in because I wasn’t perfect with taking the pill and kind of blamed the cyst on myself (not my drs words just my thoughts) so I thought the iud would be more reliable direct coverage so if I missed the pill it wasn’t too bad
The laparoscopy inserted the iud and removed a cyst in June 2021
I had to get it replaced in January 2025 because I had tissue grow back. My doctor thinks I may need supplemental hormones or to replace my IUD sooner.
I still have pain but I don’t bleed with the IUD. I was having heavy unbearable periods without pills and like medium periods on the pill.
I only had like 2 periods with the first IUD from June 2021 to January 2025. I bled after the surgery but stopped and definitely had a little mini spotting but barely a full period just tender breasts and very very moody, digestion changes, some nausea, sleep changes, a few nights of night sweats
There’s apparently an adjusting period after you first get it and then things level out but I think the adjusting period feels more extreme / hard to separate iud feelings from my laparoscopy feelings
Anyways still got scar tissue and endo tissue growth and another cyst while the iud was in that wasn’t there before the iud was put in but at least my painful periods weren’t as frequent, heavy or long lasting. It’s worth noting all those tissues were not there in Feb 2024 scans but were in Oct 2024 scans. By Jan 2025 surgery they removed a cyst too that had grown.
Ironically enough I went on a bc pill in January 2024 bc they found a cyst and it was gone by February 2024 so I stopped taking the pills since it was gone… which is how I know I didn’t have any tissue there at the time the scans were good….
I may need to combine iud and hormonal bc pills
Sorry my answer didn’t help for pain
Heat is great when it’s cramping up- For Heating pads: I like FlyHorse. It is great because it has a buckle and is rechargeable, I only do the heat setting the other just hurts, but any department or pharmacy plug in heating pads are nice to lie on too. I sometimes do both at once, heat on top and heat on bottom. I usually need iced water and the window cracked when I do this. I take 600 mg Advil. And put on a movie.
If you need to do things, like work remotely thru the pain, I also got a detachable keyboard with Bluetooth from Amazon for the iPad so I can type lying down in bed when I can’t sit up at a desk. It’s a light keyboard and small, rechargeable.
Make sure to check in with your doctor about the pain so you can make sure it’s safe and it’s not the type of pain that happens when it gets dislodged or out of place.
Level 4 is amazing for the heat with a pillowcase over it when my pain is 10/10 with the fly horse heating pad. Sometimes I need a layer of cotton t shirt too. But not double because then you can’t feel the heat.
